Class Planning - Phase 2

Introduction
Phase 1
Phase 3

My next step was to start filling in the example chart for each unit. It is important that there are connections between the activities. Can the idiom studied be used in the conversation or lesson? Can the grammar studied be practiced in conversation? Does the weekly email question connect with the conversation or lesson? What’s the purpose of the conversation? Making all this work takes time, but once it is up on the web, it will serve for the following years. All that will need to be done are some small tweaks.

It includes:
Week #, dates, holidays, grammar for the week, lesson titles, homework vocabulary, weekly email question, test dates, team project dates, idioms, conversation titles, and a daily phrase. This chart displays all the activities that students will do each day.

Grammar: We study one grammar for the entire week from the unit we are studying.

Homework Vocabulary: Students are required to complete vocabulary homework each week. I give them two words to learn, they find and learn three more. I select two words from the lessons which I think students will have problems with. There are many words to choose from. In one part of the homework, students must use the word in a sentence and practice using the grammar we are studying for the week. One new vocabulary word is shared with the class at the end of the week from each student. The student is responsible for sharing and explaining their new learned word. This list, with definitions, is printed out and distributed to all of the students in the class. Students are not allowed to look in the dictionary for new words, only the definition.

Weekly E-mail Question: Each week I send out a question to the students that require them to answer with a short answer. It is related to the conversation topic on Thursday. Their anonymous replies are posted in our Weekly Log on the web page.

Test Dates: Besides the Unit Tests, I also create a weekly grammar quiz. It is short (5 M/C questions on Quia). This gives me an opportunity to discover who is having problems with the grammar or if more time is needed to review the grammar. The Unit Tests were also created on the QUIA web site.

Team Projects: Students have an opportunity to work in their teams to work on a small project together.

Idioms: I try to find some of the more common expressions that they can use immediately in the class or at home with their family members. We study and practice one idiom a week. On the final week, they select their own idiom to share.

Conversation Titles: Most of the titles are focused on learning. We talk about what they need to do to improve their learning so they may improve on what they are doing to help themselves. Some of the conversation titles are just fun things to talk about or it may have some connection with the lesson we are studying. Students are responsible for studying the questions that will be asked in the conversation and to learn any new vocabulary words associated with the conversation. When they are prepared for the conversation, they will be able to participate in a more meaningful way.

Daily Phrase: The daily phrase was born from having students practice some of the most common phrases in the English language. Now, I take the phrases from the lesson or from the grammar we are studying. At the beginning of class, students have to write at least one sentence using the grammar and the daily phrase together. If they need more practice, they write more sentences. These sentences are shared with the class for discussion and clarification. Students may use these new words with their homework.

Lesson Activities: Students also work on a lesson writing activity at the end of each lesson. This is usually completed on the same day, at home, or the next day in class.

Dictation: This is not listed on the chart. Students practice giving dictation using five sentences that they wrote using the phrase for the day and grammar we are studying. They are corrected by the teacher before dictation is given. Students are required to give at least four dictations during the semester and one day must be a Thursday (vocabulary sharing day). On this day the student giving dictation shares all five new words they learned for the week.

Evaluations: Class and Student evaluations are filled out during the last week of the semester. The class evaluation evaluates the effectiveness of the class and teacher. The student self-evaluation is designed to have the students evaluate themselves as students in a class.

Teacher's Note: Making connections are important!
